History And Working Of A Wristwatch

A wristwatch (relogios) or a watch is a kind of a timepiece that a person wears for referring to time. Watches first came into existence in 1600s as a modification of spring powered clocks. Modern watches have a lot of other functions like that of a calendar in addition to the display of time.

Most common type of wristwatch (relogios) is worn on persons wrist and is tightened with help of a watchband that is made up of nylon, leather, any other plastic strap, metal link or sometimes, even ceramic. Before this, watches were pocket watches which were carried separately.

Watch designed was greatly improved in the 21st Century due to technological advances in the field of metallurgy, physical vapor deposition and composite materials. Better materials are now used for making watches which are more durable, more accurate, more aesthetic and more reliable.

Escapement is a kind of mechanism that limits and controls the unwinding in the watch. It converts a simple unwinding into a periodic energy release. This is done by gear interlocking that switches among driven and free state.

Balance wheel along with the spring or Hairspring forms a harmonic oscillator. This oscillator controls the gear system motion in the watch. This is similar to a pendulum clock.

Tourbillon is a rotating type of frame used for escapement. It cancels out the effects of the bias in timekeeping using gravity. Otherwise, the watch would have to be kept in the same position for a lot of time.

Movement in a watch is the mechanism which measures the time and hence helps to display the correct current time. The movements can be mechanical, electronic and maybe, even both. Most of the watches use electronic timekeeping these days even if the face of watch has a mechanical hand.

Watches (relogios) are mostly classified on basis of their movements. The classifications are Mechanical Movements, Tuning Fork Movement, Electronic Movement and Radio controlled movement. The source of power used can be a spring. There are Self Winding springs also present. Some modern watches off the movement of the wearer, some watches run with the help of the batteries, or electronic power. Some watches are light powered, while some of them are powered by the body heat.

Time display is generally done in the form of Analog or Digital display. Analog display is done using two hands, one each for hour and minute and sometimes another hand is used to display seconds. In digital display, usually there is a LCD screen on which the time in digital format appears.

All the watches (relogios) show the time in atleast hours and minutes. Few watches also show the date, day and some of them even have alarms. Some more complicated watches have stopwatch, lunar phases, Perpetual Calendar, Minute repeater and equation of the time.

When the sales of Swiss watch makers went down, they redesigned it and produced a much cheaper version in end of 20th Century. With the help of some graphic designers, they also launched an array of Fashionable watches. Dual time watches (relogios) for international travelers were designed. Collectable or Jewelry type watches were designed which had high miniaturization and precision along with nice aesthetic look. Some of the leading companies for this kind of watches are Papet Phillipe, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Rolex. Mass production is done by companies like Omega, Tag Heurer and Breitling.

Other type of watches (relogios) include computerized multifunction watches with electronic items like Calculators, Digital Cameras, Video Games, GPS receivers, Cellular Phones ad Keydrives were embedded in the watches. Some recent watches have also been marketed as Water Resistant as they are not as much affected by water as other watches and are categorized on the basis of their water repelling capability.

When is it Appropriate to Wear Sunglasses?

Most people own a pair of sunglasses, and quite a few of these will have more than one pair. Some people see their sunglasses as an essential item of fashion, whereas others would take the view that sunglasses are there just to wear in the sun. You may see someone falling in love with a pair of designer sunglasses they have just purchased, wear them constantly for a couple of weeks and then discard them without a seconds thought, forgetting about them all to soon. It’s no good just throwing them into a corner- sunglasses are very important to overall eye health and should be worn appropriately.

Ideally, sunglasses should be worn at all times whist outdoors, to help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and radiation (which by the way are also a risk in winter, despite the cold temperatures). More often than not though, most people are either unable, or simply unwilling to wear sunglasses at all times while they are outdoors, but there are certain situations that necessitate the wearing of sunglasses. You could be in a certain location or be taking part in a particular activity that warrants the wearing of sunglasses and if you don’t wear them at other times, it would be hugely important to wear them at these particular times.

Obviously the summertime would cause the most problems for your eyes as the sun emits about three times more UV radiation at this time of year than at any other. Hence it could be said that in the summer you are three times more likely to have damage done to your eyes by UVA and UVB rays than in any other season. As well as this though, there are obviously more reasons why sunglasses would be more important to wear at this time of the year.

As the summertime is warmer and brighter than any other season, people tend to spend more time outdoors at this time of year than any other. Conversely, in the warm weather people tend to splash on the sun cream to protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun- but what about the eyes? Are they not as important as the skin? You certainly can’t rub the sun cream into your eyes to protect them can you? No- so putting on a pair of sunglasses is the way to go!

Some people may experience increased photosensitivity after taking certain medications and this heightened sensitivity to light and particularly sunlight causes a great deal of discomfort. Wearing sunglasses alleviates this problem making life a bit more bearable for the unfortunate sufferers.

Hitting the ski slopes is always a lot of fun- lots of snow and lots of cold. Sunglasses would be the last thing on your mind at times like these but you would be making a big mistake. The sun may not be warm or shine as brightly as other times or places but the damage that can be caused to the eyes is large. Snow has the unfortunate effect of reflecting the suns glare straight into your eyes, risking eye burn if they are not protected.

Taking to the water is not without its problems either. Whether you are water skiing or surfing you must take precautions. Water has the ability to reflect the suns glare, just as snow does. It may not be to the same extent but it’s certainly enough to cause damage to the eyes.

The bottom line is that your eyes are important- more than important. They are vital! Be sensible and protect them when you’re out and about- you may just have something to be thankful for in years to come.

A Look At Some Of The Top Trends In Shoe Fashion Today

Shoe shopping is very popular for most people, as the average person will acquire five new pairs of shoes each year. Some women surpass that amount in just a week. Either way, when people are ready to embark on their shoe-shopping venture, they’re going to want to make sure they get a pair of shoes that are both stylish and comfortable. This article will provide basic information on the various trends in shoe design a person should be aware of before they actually purchase their shoes. With this knowledge they can get a better idea of what types of shoes will work best for their individual style.

Vibrant Colors

Newer shoe styles tend to have very bright colors. Even tennis shoes, which used to be white or black, can come in an array of colors. This goes for virtually any other style of shoe whether they are dress shoes, pumps, mules or flip-flops. People that follow the trend of vibrant shoe colors tend to choose shoes that are similar to the colors of their wardrobe, but not completely. Newcomers to this trend may think that doing things in this manner would create a mismatched appearance, but once you get used to it, you realize that the brighter colors actually complement the colors of the wardrobe.

Sexiness

High heel shoes have already been considered sexy, but they have gotten to be more so due to current shoe trends. The sexiest high heel shoes are those containing multiple straps with thinner heels. However, the sexiness factor is lost if you don’t know how to walk in the heels or if the shoes are uncomfortable. So, keep this in mind as you go about considering what shoes you are going to buy.

The Shoe Designs of Yesteryear: Retro Styles

Retro shoes make a person look as if they are coming out of a different era in time. Examples of retro shoes are Mary Janes. This trend is another one that may seem controversial for many shoe wearers, especially those who are more conservative. Yet, with the right pair of retro shoes, a person can still look classy without appearing out of place in today’s time.

More Flip-Flops

Flip-flops are an excellent shoe in the summer time. They help keep the feet dry, (which is especially important if a person sweats a lot or just came from the water) and they are inexpensive. They can also fit a large variety of feet. Yet, there are two downsides with them. First, they are not very good for long-distance walking, as you might notice a blister from walking too much in a pair of flip-flops. Secondly, a person needs to make sure their toes are well-manicured, since flip-flops expose the top portion of the foot. People who have foot conditions will not look attractive in flip-flops. Even women with unpainted toenails won’t look as good, (regardless of whether or not their toenails are healthy). So, the best solution is to resolve any health issues associated with the foot along with painting the toenails. In fact, with the right color nail polish, the look of the flip-flop can be accentuated more when the toenails get painted.

A Brief History of Sunglasses

The history of sunglasses can be traced back hundreds of years to the great Chinese dynasties. At the time smoke tinting was the method used to darken eyeglasses. The glasses were not initially intended to protect people’s eyes from the sun and indeed early tinted glasses were said to have been worn by judges in China who, for centuries, regularly wore the darkened lenses not for vision-correction or to reduce glare from the sun (although they did have the ability to do this) but these smoke-coloured flat panes of quartz were actually used to conceal the eye expressions and to a point, facial expressions of the judges whilst in court.

Smoke-tinted lenses did occasionally serve as sunglasses but that was never their primary function, so when vision-correcting eyeglasses were introduced into China from Italy in c.1430, they too were tinted, though still mainly for use in the courts.

In the mid-18th century, an English man by the name of James Ayscough began experimenting with tinted lenses in glasses, or spectacles as they were known. These were not “sunglasses” as such, as Ayscough strongly believed that blue, or even green tinted glass could correct specific vision problems. Protection from the sun’s rays was not an issue for Ayscough at the time.

It wasn’t until the 20th century that modern-type sunglasses came to be. Early silent movie stars were said to wear them before filming to shield their eyes from the glare of stage lights, which were often as bright as the sun itself. In 1929, an American named Sam Foster began mass producing cheap sunglasses that were designed to protect people’s eyes from the sun. These were snapped up by beach goers in New Jersey and this period consequently saw a massive upsurge in demand for them. And so the dawn of sunglasses as a fashion accessory was upon us. By 1930, sunglasses were all the rage and anyone who was anyone had to own a pair.

In 1936, sunglasses became polarized when Edwin H. Land, founder of the Polaroid Corporation, invented the first inexpensive filters capable of polarising light, Polaroid film. Around this time, even more Americans started buying sunglasses. With famous stars of stage and music also wearing them, they were becoming not only a way to protect eyes against the sun but also a way to look ‘cool’. Sunglasses had by now become a cultural phenomenon with some people even starting to wear them when it wasn’t sunny and sometimes even when they were indoors. According to popular belief though, sunglasses really became ‘cool’ during the Second World War, when wartime images of soldiers wearing sunglasses made them an inspirational item among young people the world over.

In the sixties, an ingenious advertising campaign by the comb and glass firm of Foster Grant ‘persuaded’ fashion designers of the day, as well as Hollywood film stars to escalate the sunglass craze and a giant industry was born, where only a few decades earlier none existed.

With the ever increasing concerns over the effects of the sun’s rays, the future of sunglasses looks assured. UV protection is now an industry standard and there are sunglasses available for a variety of pursuits. The different lens tints available are numerous and sunglasses have changed styles many times over the years. Some prescription glasses have also been given tints that only appear when the sun’s rays hit the glasses. Technology is certainly alive and well in the sunglass business and who knows what we can expect in the future?

How to Become Top Fashion Designer

You know you’re destined to be a fashion designer if you: a) spent most of your childhood making clothes for your Barbie dolls instead of playing with your friends; b) read fashion magazines instead of your school books; c) ran a boutique out of your basement at age 10. In other words: if you want to be the next Yves Saint Laurent, it helps to be completely and utterly obsessed with fashion.

However, there are many aspects of the profession. Working as a fashion designer can just as well mean supervising a design team at a sportswear company as producing a label under your own name. Although the former career may not seem as glamorous as the latter, it certainly will make your life less stressful. To create your own label takes a lot of time, dedication and hard work. Not to mention living just above the poverty line for several years.

Choosing a strategy

There are as many different ways to embark upon a fashion career as there are styles of design. Ralph Lauren’s Polo empire was founded on a small tie collection that he sold to Bloomingdales. Helmut Lang decided to open his own clothing store when he couldn’t find a t-shirt that he liked. Michael Kors built up a network of customers by selling clothes in a trendy NYC boutique. However, most people find that the best foundation for a design career is to get a fine arts degree in fashion at a prestigious school. Besides teaching you the craft, a good school will also add credibility to your resum. We live in a brandname society, and having the name of a good school behind you really does help, says Carol Mongo, Director of the Fashion Department at Parsons School of Design in Paris.

Applying to a school

There are a lot of colleges that have fashion programs, but only a handful has the kind of reputation that can really push your career. It’s hard to enter these schools as competition is high, and they tend to be very selective. You apply by sending a portfolio of drawings of your designs. We can’t teach you how to be creative a you have to bring your creativity to us and let us lead you on your way, says Carol Mongo. She recommends students to get some sewing experience before they apply. Drawing is also an important skill for a designer a it is the way you communicate your ideas. In order to build an impressive portfolio it’s a good idea to have some experience in sketching; taking art classes will help you understand form and proportion. But you don’t have to be an expert drawer to get accepted to a school. The most important quality that we look for in our students is that they are truly passionate and exuberant about fashion, says Mongo. If you have wonderful ideas but can’t draw, there are always ways to get around it. You could for example put your designs on a mannequin and take pictures of it.

What school will do for you

Most fashion programs are three to four years long. During that time you will take fine arts classes and study drawing, color composition and form. You will also learn pattern making, draping and cutting techniques. One of the most important advantages of design schools is that they work really closely with the industry. Parsons, for example, have designer critic projects where successful designers like Donna Karan and Michael Kors work directly with the graduating students. Ambitious students also have the chance to win prestigious awards and grants, which bring them a lot of attention as well as financial support. One very important event is the fashion show at the end of the last semester, when graduating students show their collections. A lot of important people from the fashion industry attend these shows to scout new talent. It’s also an opportunity to be really outrageous and get noticed by the media. Hussein Chalayan, for example, became instantly infamous when he showed rotting clothes that he had buried in his backyard for his graduation show at Saint Martins.

Alternative routes

Let’s be realistic, says Carol Mongo at Parsons, School’s not for everyone. If you’re just looking to get a job in the fashion industry a not a career as a designer a you probably don’t need to go school. If you want to work as a seamstress or a patternmaker, the best thing is probably to apply for an internship at a fashion house and work your way up. However, there are many examples of famous designers who started out as interns with no formal training. For example, Dior’s brightest new star, men’s wear designer Hedi Slimane, had a degree in journalism when he started working with men’s wear designer Jos Levy. Balenciaga’s Nicolas Ghesquire is another example of a brilliantly successful designer who learned the jobs hands-on, as an assistant at Jean-Paul Gaultier. Usually, you apply for an internship by sending a portfolio to a fashion house you’re interested in. But it’s a good idea to call them up beforehand to see exactly what they need. It’s also important to note that competition is fierce, and unless you have personal connections, it’s very difficult to get an internship without an education.
There are also designers, like Luella Bartley, who started their own business after working as stylists for several years, thus building an industry network as well as a good marketing sense.

Understanding the business

Unfortunately, it’s not enough for a designer to be creative; you also have to have some business sense. As fashion gets more and more corporate driven, it’s important to be aware of the business climate and understanding the mechanics behind it. By religiously reading trade papers like Women’s Wear Daily you will get a lot of valuable information. If you want to run your own company, you need to be extremely organized and learn at least the basics of economics. A lot of fashion schools are currently increasing business classes in their curriculum. Our students have to be smart enough to know how to negotiate a contract, or to pick a business partner, says Carol Mongo. It’s perhaps telling that many of the designers that are really successful today, like Calvin Klein or Tom Ford, are involved in every aspect of the business a from licensing strategies to ad campaigns to actually designing the clothes.

London Fall 08 Fashion Week Shoes

Each different Fashion Week has its own feel to it. Even in the ready-to-wear collections that aren’t as far out there as the couture collections, there are still notable differences between Milan, New York, Paris, and London.

What I love about London’s Fashion Week is the ominpresence of Cheeky Fashion. The London catwalks are always full of designers who are taking traditional styles and putting a wink and a nudge on them and turning them into something new.

No exception this week, which has so far brought us Paul Smith, where we saw cross-country ski boots being cut, modified, and spruced up with surprising dashes of color on the heels and soles.

Paul Smith 1 Paul Smith 2

It’s brought us the Giles show, with a runway full of multicolored, extravagantly Swarovski’d sandals and Christopher Kane’s GIGANTIC paillettes that make us think about what it means to be a sparkly evening shoe.

Giles Christopher Kane

It’s brought us Eley Kishimoto’s colorful romp, where standards like tweed and weatherproof boots have been turned into bright, fashionable footwear.

Eley Kishimoto 2 Eley Kishimoto 1

And, cheekiest of all, it’s brought us the House of Holland collection, which was chock full of an invented clan tartan and accessories based on the Scottish tam and sporran. Note also, that crest on the clothes and the backdrop is a stylized picture of current supermodel (and star of the House of Holland show), Agness Deyn.

House of Holland 2 House of Holland 1

I love that the London shows can always be counted on for an element of playfulness that doesn’t often show up in the other major Fashion Week cities. Hey, if they invented British cheek, they have every right to own it, and boy, do they! Cheers!

Shoes of Project Runway 4.11: Final Round Up

We’ve made it, folks. The designers going to Bryant Park have been chosen. Well, they already went, and had their fashion shows last week, and all of the final 5 designers got to show their collections (see pics of them all by scrolling back through the Blogging Project Runway posts).

But the finale of the show is still to come, and this was the last episode with Bluefly runway shoes. So, here are the shoes that were used on this final episode, where the challenge (to create an outfit inspired by a work of art at the Me) was one of my all time favorites.
Of course, Jillian went with the Patron Shoe of Project Runway 4 with this outfit inspired by the armor in this Master of the Argonauts painting.

PR 4.11 Jillian Versace MJs

Master of the Argonauts

Rami made a lovely but snore-ful dress inspired by (surprise surprise) a Greek statue of Aphrodite with Classical draping. He paired it with the Marc Jacobs plum colored platforms we’ve seen before.

PR 4.11 Rami Marc Jacobs platform

The Whiner won the challenge with this elaborate multi-piece outfit that I will grudgingly admit (as I do with all his stuff) is some gorgeous fashion design. His inspiration was a portrait of Don Andrés de Andrade y la Cal by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and he used a pair of black pointy-toe boots to nice effect with this outfit. Hard to tell exactly which boots these are, but it looks like they’re the same ones Jillian and Victorya used with their English punk-inspired outfit, for which I’d suggested these Kenneth Cole “That’s the Point” boots.

PR 4.11 Christian

Murillo

Sweet P went with a painting of a beautiful peacock’s tail by Melchior d’Hondecoeter, and created a dress that was cute, but underwhelming for this final challenge. The hair and make-up is really what made this outfit, if you ask me. And she used the mysterious gold sandals that have shown up several times before, but don’t seem to be up on Bluefly anymore.

PR 4.11 Sweet P Peacocks

And even though we can’t see the shoes on Chris’s outfit (and even though the dress was greatly reminiscent of the dress he and Christian designed a few weeks ago) I post it here, because it was indeed a gorgeous gown. The painting that inspired it is a portrait of Marie Francoise De La Cropte De La St. Abre by Jean Marc Nattier.

Rachel Weisz’s Red Patent Shoes for Valentine’s Day

I’ve had a girl crush on Rachel Weisz since…oh, maybe The Mummy movies, but she’s been nothing but lovely in everything else I’ve seen her. I don’t know how this new romantic comedy that she stars in is–Definitely Maybe–but I think she looked just lovely at the premiere in NY:

I love the pewter-red combination, and I particularly love her inspired choice of shoes:

Red Shoes

I’m fairly certain (though not 100% sure) that these are Brian Atwood red patent platform pumps, available at Saks for $525:

Brian atwood

If not, that’s pretty close–and would make a lovely choice for a Valentine Day’s dinner date.
